Your Path to God

www.cabc.org/litesite.cfmHave you ever gazed at a sunset and felt a tug in your heart that there must be a Creator?  All the wonders of our world—from the intricate design of an atom to the grandeur of the galaxies—declare that God exists.  But how can you know Him?  Is there a path to God?

Jesus Christ said, “’I am the way and the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).  He didn’t say that He knows the way to God; rather, He is the way.  His life, death, and resurrection made possible your path to God.

How can Jesus become your way?  The Bible gives the answer with three crucial points.

The Roadblock of Sin

Many people try to find God through spiritual exercises or self-effort.  However, a roadblock of sin stands in the way of even the most sincere person.  You may have done some good things, such as being kind or giving to charity, but God is holy, and His moral standard is perfection.  Even your best efforts can’t meet God’s requirement.  No one can claim perfection.

According to the Bible, “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).  As a result, each person stands guilty before the divine Judge and, until the sin issue is addressed, no one can see God.

The Offer of a Sacrifice

The good news is that God loves you too much to leave you in a guilty state.  He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to live a perfect life and become the perfect sacrifice for your sins.  “He Himself bore our sins in his body on the cross” (1 Peter 2:24).

In a word, Jesus is your substitute.  He took your guilt upon Himself.  By suffering in your place, He bore your judgment and offers you life with God as a gift.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

The Decision of Faith

Your first step toward God, then, is to believe that Jesus is your Savior.  “Whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).  Jesus did what you couldn’t do on your own—satisfy God’s holy requirements.  He lived a perfect life, then He bore your sins through His death, and then He rose from the dead to demonstrate His power.

Jesus is like a bridge over the wall of sin that separates you from your Creator.  When you believe in Him, you cross over from death to life, from separation to union with God forever.

“Through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand” (Romans 5:2)

If you’ve never told God that you trust in Jesus as your Savior, you can tell Him right now through a prayer like this:

Dear God,
I know that my sin has put a barrier between You and me.  Thank You for sending Jesus to die in my place.  I trust in Jesus alone to forgive my sins, and I accept His gift of eternal life.  I ask Jesus to be my personal Savior and the Lord of my life.  Thank You.  In Jesus’ name, amen.

If these words express the belief in your heart, then your faith “is credited as righteousness” (Romans 4:5).  You no longer stand guilty before God; instead, you stand in the righteousness of Jesus Christ, fully accepted by God and free to enjoy a lifelong, joyous relationship with Him!
