New to College Avenue Baptist Church?
There is a place for you at College Avenue. We
want you to be able to experience the great music, encouraging messages,
friendly people and enjoyable atmosphere that are a part of CABC. And
we know that your first time at a church, any church, brings up some
questions.
How
do I get there? ... what
should I expect in church? ... what should
I wear? ...
what's available for my kids?
... will I be asked to give money? ... How do I connect? Here
is a quick look at what you can expect.
Here at CABC, we'll make sure the first face you see when you approach the church has a smile on it. Whether you need childcare or are looking for a place for your teens, stop by the green cabanas and someone will be nearby to help you get where you need to go. If it's been a long time since you've been to church, CABC has you in mind! There's already enough you have to think about when you're visiting a church for the first time. We hope that getting some of this "stuff" out of the way not only encourages you to join us for church, but also helps you to connect with the hope and encouragement that God has for you.
What should I expect in church?
In all of our services you will get practical messages that help you
deal with real life issues. We have Bibles available for you if you
need one. What you learn on Sunday, you'll be able to use during the
week. Whether you join us in the main sanctuary, the gymnasium, Adams
Hall or in one of our several international services, we want to help
you connect with the hope and help that God can give us. Music has the
power to speak to the heart! And many of us like different styles of
music. So, we have multiple worship styles represented in our venues.
What should I wear?
We're more concerned with meeting your real life
needs than with what you wear. Come and be comfortable in whatever you
like to wear. In the Gym Services, you can dress casually and you'll
fit right in ... there are always a few ties and lots of flip flops.
And in the Sanctuary Service, you will fit in our traditional format
whether you are dressed formally or wearing California casual.
What's available for my kids?
We know that as a parent you need be sure that your children are in a SAFE learning environment. And we know that your children are looking for a FUN place to learn. We've invested a lot to make sure that both of these goals are reached. You'll see that in the buildings the children and students meet in, and even more in the volunteers who work with your kids. To go to a personal message from our pastors who work with your kids click on the following words: Children, Middle School. Senior High.
Will I be asked to give money?
We want your experience here to come with no strings attached. The offering is for those who are part of the College Avenue Baptist Church family and for those who freely choose to contribute. Our desire is that until this place is your spiritual home, our desire is for you to sit back and experience God without any guilt or expectation.
How do I connect?
New to CABC and want to find out more about our church family and get connected? The 4-week Connect Orientation is your first step. It will answer some of your question of who we are, why we are here, what are our values, what membership means, what is going on at CABC and get a chance to talk with some of the leaders in the church. You will also learn about the volunteer opportunities. Class starts April 13, 2008 at 9:45 AM in the craft rooms. To help us be prepared for the meal, please let us know you are coming. Contact Melissa Esten at melissaesten@cabc.org or phone 619-582-7222.

What to Expect... Children's Ministry
Children are our passion and our reason for ministry. We believe that children can develop great values and character. By working alongside parents we hope to accomplish this through biblical teaching and providing Christ-like models to emulate. We provide children, ages birth through 5th grade, with the heritage of our 110 years of ministry, building faith and values that last for eternity. Our model for great relationships is Jesus and His words.
We believe that kids who love Jesus can make a huge difference in their world! All of us involved in The H.E.A.R.T. Company are committed to children and want kids to grasp the truth of God which will give them the foundation to hold fast to Jesus no matter what the future holds.
Our teachers, care givers and staff volunteer their time and talents in serving and loving your children. The staff is carefully supervised by our Children's Ministries Director and Coordinators.

What to Expect on Sundays in the Nursery
Birth-23 Months
Before you leave the house please bring with you in a labeled bag:
-Two or three disposable diapers (no cloth diapers please)
-Diaper wipes
-Pacifier or other security item should your child need comfort. We do not encourage an abundance of toys, as they are more likely to get left behind or lost.
-A complete change of clothing just in case your should require that
-A bottle or sippy cup of formula, water, juice or milk.
*Please label all of your child's items with first and last name before arriving to your child's class.
Wellness Policy
We operate a child wellness program. For the protection of ALL children, in our rooms, we cannot accept children with runny noses, fresh colds (4 days or less), fever, diarrhea, cough or other signs of illness. We request that you not place your child in Sunday School if they are showing any signs of sickness, as we want to not expose other children. Thank you for keeping Heartland a safe and healthy place for all kids!
When You Arrive in the Nursery
A lead teacher will meet you at the check-in counter to greet your child and receive any items that you brought. Please fill out the visitor sheet with your family's information and the sign-in sheet with your child's name, your location and any special instructions that might apply to your child. At your first visit, the lead teacher will ask you to fill out a diaper tag with your child's important information. In the future, your child's diaper tag with claim check is clipped onto the wall right next to the counter. Please attach diaper tag to your child's bag and remove the claim check. The lead teacher will apply a sticker nametag to the back of your child for identification and offer you a pager to take with you into service. Please hold or wear the pager at all times. When you arrive to pick up you child, make turn in claim check and pager.
Snacks
We provide snacks for children in the Waddler and Toddler classes. Snacks consist of graham, goldfish and ritz crackers with water. Please inform the Lead Teacher if your child has an allergy.
Saying Goodbye
After you have completed the check in process, simply wave a quick goodbye and leave for the worship service. As you know, little ones sometimes cry as their parent leaves, but it does not normally last long and gets easier with time. Our teachers will create an interest in a toy or activity and give assurance that you will be back when church is over. If your child cries for an extended amount of time, we will page you.
Checking On Your Child
Feel free to peek in on your child at anytime during the service. Just make sure to do it discretely, trying not to let them see you.
Pick-Up Procedure
Your child's teacher will expect the same person to pick up the child who dropped them off. A child will not be released to someone who does not have their claim check. Please remember to pick up all of your child's belongings. Items left for an extended amount of time will be donated to the Neighborhood Care Center.
Sleeping Baby Room in the Baby Nursery and the Courtesy Room in the back of the Gym.
There are two rooms available for nursing moms that will provide privacy during nursing times. Because space is limited, we do ask that mothers use the space to just the time required to meet the needs of their child.

What to Expect for your Elementary Age Child
Welcome to HEARTLAND, U.S.A.
If you are going to join us for the first time we would like you to feel as comfortable as possible. Our Children's area is known as HEARTLAND because we are about touching the hearts of our kids! It's a little tricky to find our MAIN STREET but feel free to ask at the green cabanas and someone will guide your family to our town.
Your first STOP (literally!) will be at the Stamping Stop Sign where you and your child will be stamped with the same number (it's invisible ink!) so we make sure that they right student leaves with the right parent.
After they get their stamp, your student will head to their elementary classroom where they are greeted by our warm and friendly team of leaders. Their morning includes worship, recreation, snack, creative teaching and a world view challenge. We believe that learning about God should be true but fun!
Screening for all HEARTLAND volunteers includes a background check, reference checks as well as a personal interview with the Children's Staff.
If you have any questions please don't hesitate to call us!
Our Elementary Coordinator is Kelly Wallace and she would love to hear from you! (619) 582-7222 ext. 244!
We've got a warm welcome waiting for you!
Nancy Burgess, Children's Director
What to expect for your Middle Schooler
Welcome to Middle School!
Middle School (6-8th grades) can be some of the most chaotic years of our lives. Some of the biggest emotional, physical, and spiritual changes can happen during these years. Our ministry is devoted to creating a place for middle school students to come and be themselves while they are discovering who they truly are. Here at CABC we will intentionally reach these students with the love the Christ, connect them with other Christians, to help them grow in their faith and then challenge those growing to discover their ministry. Each activity we have is purposely design to fall under this mission. Both Sunday mornings and Wednesday's we meet in the Middle School Room, Upstairs in the Family Center.
If you have any questions or need more information please email me!
Jay Foulk, Middle School Graduate Intern.
What to expect for your High Schooler
Welcome to High School
This is a place for High School students (grades 9-12) to experience
God through small groups, worship, and Bible study as well as a place
to build community and invite friends who have questions about God.
We have all kinds of activities for High School Students throughout
the year that promise to meet the needs of every student, no matter
where they're at in their spiritual journeys. Our ministry to high school
students is one of relationships and ministry programs designed to reach
high school students with the love of Christ, then connect them with
other Christians to help them grow in their faith and then challenge
them to discover their own ministry area. Every event or program we
have in the high school ministry will fall under one of those areas.
If you have any questions or need more information I would love to hear from you.
Brett Murdock, High School Director
